By Unknown Means is Miami Vice, Magnum P.I., and James Bond, all rolled into one. It is the action-packed story of U.S. Customs Service Agent Michael Callaway, who loves his job patrolling the waters of South Florida and the Bahamas in a go-fast boat known as Blue Thunder III. On a night of searching for an inbound drug boat, Callaway is involved in a shootout at sea that lands him in big trouble with his boss. Facing termination from the Customs Service, he is lucky enough to come into a large amount of money, so he quits his job, buys an old shrimp boat that has been converted to a yacht, and heads to the Bahamas to fish and chill out. His relaxation is cut short when he goes to a bar in Nassau, and runs into one of the nastiest drug smugglers in the world, Anton Drake. He is surprised that the man is being protected by Carrie Marvin, whom he knew as an undercover DEA agent, and as a lover. Calloway vows to end Drake’s smuggling career, so he can get Carrie away from this monster, and back in his life. To do this, he must discover Drake’s method for smuggling his drugs into the United States, and end it. A method of smuggling that the Customs Service, DEA, and United States Navy haven’t been able to figure out. A method that causes every report investigating Drake’s smuggling operation to end with the words “by unknown means.

I enjoyed this story from the very first page. It is a high action tale of drugs and the men and women who try to keep our states, cities and towns free of this menace to society's children. It delves deep into the underbelly of and the psychic of those who would poison our children and our way of life with these substances.

I loved the Character of Mike Callaway. He was your bad boy high school rogue who has channeled his good guy gone Customs Agent/Border Control as protector of our borders. I loved that even in his the execution of his duties he still had that element of they bad boy. The fact that he won a mega lottery and could tell them to kiss his BUTT, didn't hurt either, and go off to pursue his own interest just added to the spice of the story. Especially when he still couldn't let it go and wound up being the hero of the hour.

I loved his new love interest Carrie and how the author gave you a satisfactory conclusion to this story and yet managed to leave the door open for the new one in the series. This is my kind of author. The kind that can write and is confident that he can successfully execute the present story in a way that makes you just have to read the next one.

Love and and it believe the following one will be as good if no better than this one. Highly recommend it and would have given it 5 stars but I believe this author can do even better so I needed to leave some wiggle room for the next one.

BY UNKNOWN MEANS by Doug Giacobbe

Fortunately, the story had me hooked before the editing and content errors would have made this a two, rather than four, star review.

Giacobbe's fast moving plot is reminiscent of early Cussler (back when he actually wrote his books himself), but with entirely believable scenarios.

The characters are true to life, the locales suitably interesting and events unfold smoothly.
I'm eagerly awaiting the next in what promises to be an interesting and active series.
This book started off different from previously read books because you started trying to figure out what was going to happen right away. I was amazed by what they had to go through to catch drug smugglers and see what could happen when you need to act to save yourself. I read this book in one night because was so interested in seeing how it ended. I was not disappointed with the ending. I think that any additional information that I give you about this story line would spoil it for the reader who purchase this book. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.
Non-stop action. The protagonist takes most disastrous situations in side, but he's also man enough to show his fear. When the situation is very dire, his creative side takes over, using a "McGyver" approach in coming up with a solution.

This author has created very vivid and memorable characters, together with a fast paced and realistic plot. You'll be sorry to reach the end of this book.

I'll be on the look out for this author's next book. However, I hope he'll be using a different editor - one who knows how to spell and what words mean. There are quite a few misspelled words as well as wrong words.
I enjoyed reading this book. The story is good, so too is the plot. I felt, though that the author could have used an editor. I do understand that editors aren't cheap and for this reason I didn't let the odd missing word or typo put me off. The dialogue at times was a little stinted and unrealistic. I don't feel characters would have reacted (by saying what they did) as they did in certain situations. Being a daily user of Morse Code myself, I also found the time the protagonist sent a long, detailed message by Morse, after not having used that skill for many years, to be unrealistic. Even in real life, operators tend to keep their transmissions short and to the point. Other than these minor criticisms. I found the book an enjoyable read.
Book starts off with one heck of a boat chase what with American agents going after illegal drug runners and rarely lets up. Calloway and cast had me in stitches on and off through the book, Commander Eldridge being a character I took a shine to as I can just picture the man wanting so very badly to get himself and his crew of the naval hrydrofoil ship Pegasus into battle before both him and the ship are essentially mothballed. The author does such a great job of story building and even makes catching a fish sound ultra exciting. I was very tempted to give the book five stars were it not for some obvious typos and over the top action sequences, but fun wins out on this offering and YES, I would read the sequel!
I did enjoy reading the book. I feel like it got too wordy re the technical jargon and I had already thought that the Pegasus would end up “saving the day” way in the beginning so it was a bit predictable. This sounds harsh but I read A LOT! As previously stated, the books story was good, I enjoyed the characters and read in 2 days.
Doug Giacobbe is a good writer - no question about that. Like a lot of writers he apparently has a hard time cutting out what he has written, even if it impedes the story.

Toward the end of the book I found myself skipping over 10-15 pages at a time to just get on with it. For example, the two main characters have an extended discussion of fishing that went on and on and on and on etc. It added nothing to the story or plot development.

Also, please - the Country in South America is Colombia with two Os.
Not Columbia, like the university, the north American river, the District of Columbia, and the province in western Canada British Columbia. Co-lom-bee-a, not Co-looooom-bee-a

Good story, engaging characters, in need of editing and it is a 4 star at least.
